This area of Bristol has a long history; for many years it was a parish outside the city walls and quite separate from it. However, the ever-expanding port swallowed up the district and it became a suburb, although the ships still came up (and past) here. Much of the old housing was a dreadful slum - known as The Pit for obvious reasons - and has since gone. However a few traces of the industrial past remain, but for how long?
