St Stephen’s House in Marston Street is popularly known as "Staggers". It is an Anglican theological college in the catholic tradition and one of six religious permanent private Halls of the University of Oxford. This college was founded in 1876 by members of the Tractarian movement. Initially it was situated in the city centre, where the New Bodleian Library now stands. From 1919, it occupied a site in Norham Gardens, near to the University Parks but in 1980 it moved here into what was previously the mother-house of the Society of St John the Evangelist (a.k.a. the Cowley Fathers). The Founder's Chapel, within the complex, is where Dietrich Bonhoeffer is reputed to have decided to return to Germany, where he was martyred. Marston Road links Cowley Road with Iffley Road.
