Introduction
The photograph on this page of Guess what's down there by Neil Owen as part of the Geograph project.

Part of the Temple area of Bristol has been extensively redeveloped into a massive office complex. However, the planners haven't swept every trace of history away: this dark polished marble platform (and a few others down the way) are actually glass-topped. Look down into the depths and you can see remains of the original Rivergate. This was part of the old Portwall, built in the thirteenth century, and allowed access from the protection of the city out into the marshy meadows of Temple Meads.
