Old YHANI Youth Hostel near Hilltown, Co Down

The Youth Hostel Association of Northern Ireland had the luxury of two small hostels operating together near Hilltown for a short period in the mid 1940s. They were less than two miles apart. Leitrim Lodge had operated since 1935, but it was joined by this hostel at Rock House in 1943. Both were closed down in 1948 as they were needed for other purposes. The Association opened another youth hostel nearby, at Kinnahalla, a decade later. This photo was taken in 2005. Please contact if you have any tales to tell of old hostels like this.
