Old Headington, Oxford

With London Road (the A420) 3-4 minutes walk away - behind the photographer - this is the view along the oldest part of Old High Street, looking towards the crossroads in the village. The house on the left-hand margin is Headington House, the former home of Isaiah Berlin (1909–1997). He came to England when he was 11yrs old and won a scholarship to Oxford. He was also the first Jewish person ever to be elected to All Souls College and in 1966 he became Wolfson College's first President. Berlin married Mrs Aline Halban (née de Gunzbourg) in 1956 and came to live in this house, her home, with her two sons in the same year. He lived here until his death in 1997. Beyond the lamp-post on the left is an entrance/exit into a narrow road called The Croft and in the bottom right-hand corner is the turning into North Place, with access into Bury Knowle Park.
