The planners of the New Town sited the industrial areas on the low-lying land so that they would soon be hidden by the many existing trees as well as by the fast-growing species that were everywhere planted. This was a successful strategy: industry is hardly visible in the long views across the town. Recent industrial and housing development outside the New Town 'envelope' pays less attention to the visual consequences. Reference: Anne Bradford. Old Redditch Voices.
