Category C listed, Historic Scotland's Statutory List describes the building thus: "THE KNOWES, WAVERLEY LODGE (Ref:35767) This building is in the Scottish Borders Council and the Kelso Burgh. It is a category C building and was listed on 02/07/1980. Group Items: N/A, Group Cat: N/A, Map Ref: N/A. Description Mid 19th century with late 19th century additions in present form, rendered and lined as ashlar, slated roof. South front: 2 storey, originally 3 bay with centre bay advanced: canted at ground floor, corbelled to square at 1st floor with curvilinear gable over. Additional bay to east and square bays added to ground floor in late 19th century. West gable to the Knowes: 2 bay, 2 storey with square hoodmoulds at 1st floor window and quatoefoil in gable, straight coped skews with set offs and corniced stack at gabled head. Plaster bust of Sir Walter Scott on bracket between windows side gate has sculpture of Sir Walter Scott's dog, Maida, over lintel. Notes Incorporates the cottage where Sir Walter Scott stayed in the spring of 1783. Shown as Waverley Lodgeon 1860 OS Map and as school on 1898 OS Map. " source : Historic Scotland
