The Geograph project started in 2005 with the aim of publishing, organising and preserving representative images for every square kilometre of Great Britain, Ireland and the Isle of Man.

Part funded by the Scots-born American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the library opened in 1904. It occupies a prominent corner site on what used to be the town's main thoroughfare.
