Part of a grassed area inside the perimeter wall of the Northumberland Court and Richardson Flats complex, with the archway entrance into Northumberland Court's inner quadrangle visible through the scaffolding. This complex of almshouses, plus a range of complementary sheltered accommodation units that are situated in this outer green space, have developed as a result of the efforts of various trusts. These trusts including “a hospital for twelve elderly people” endowed in 1641 by a local merchant and politician, Sir John Lister, have amalgamated and expanded over a 350 year period to support their endeavours. This, the older Grade II-listed part of the complex was opened in 1887 under the auspices of "The Hull Municipal Charities" with 101 bedsit-type units. However, in the mid-90s the residential facilities were converted into 58 single-bedroomed flats for couples or individuals.
