This picture was taken from the top of the new four storey Ikea store that opened in October 2006 on the site of the former United Utilities depot at the junction of Oldham Road and Wellington Road. The Swedish flatpack furniture giant lost a seven-year battle (much to Ashtons delight) to site an out-of-town store in Stockport after the High Court in 2005 upheld the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott’s decision to refuse planning permission. Forced to rethink its traditional favouring of out-of-town sites, Ikea chose Ashton because of its motorway links. The store is less than one mile from the M60 junction.
