St. Pega's Road is the main street through Peakirk. The large white building was originally a public house known as The Railway Inn (being located close to the village's former railway station). The pub was opened in 1848 to cater for workers constructing the Lincolnshire Loop Line. The indentation in the wall where the pub sign was mounted is still visible. The Railway Inn closed in 1957 and the building subsequently served as a post office until its closure in 1987 and is now a private residence. The smaller white building once housed the village blacksmith's shop. It served from 1999 to 2009 as a second-hand and antiquarian bookshop trading as Peakirk Books; the business still trades under this name online but has since relocated to the North Norfolk coast.
