The path lies on the course of the old Roman Aqueduct that brought water to Dorchester (Durnovaria) from an area near Notton about 6 miles up the Frome Valley. The aqueduct would have been about 5ft wide and 3ft deep and could have delivered as much as 8m gallons daily.
