This was built to connect Glenochil Colliery to the main railway network, The colliery was ill-fated and short-lived, operating only from 1956 to 1962. Envisaged as one of the UK's 'Superpits', the extent of available workable reserves was grossly overestimated; much had already been abstracted by earlier workings.
