Rotherfield was Hyđerafeld in 1015, meaning cattle grazing field. It had become double barreled by 1233 as Retheresfelde Pipard. The second element is a family name, old French "Pipart" equivalent to "Piper" in English. (Oxford Dict. of English Place Names)
