The London - Dunmow Roman road crossed the brook here, although, as may be seen, it is a simple fording job except in times of flood. The brick bridge beyond dates from 1783, replacing a wooden bridge of 1762. Before that there was only a horse bridge, vehicles presumably fording the brook when possible.
