The first 'British Schools' were set up in the early 19th century by a non-denominational charity - 'The British and Foreign School Society for the Education of the Labouring and Manufacturing Classes of Society of Every Religious Persuasion'. 'National Schools' had a generally similar purpose, but were Church of England foundations. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_and_Foreign_School_Society http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_school_(England_and_Wales) A foundation stone commemorates an extension built in 1872, but quite when Godalming British School was first built I can't say - an earlier foundation stone is badly weathered and partly illegible. Beyond it, in this shot, are a rather boxy fire station and Godalming United Church.
