Hidden away in a patch of woodland which has grown up on old mine workings. The chimney belongs to a mine shaft at the bottom of which a furnace would have been lit to create a strong updraught. This would draw air through the mine from a different shaft to provide ventilation before mechanical fans were introduced. Such chimneys would have been common during the early part of the 19th century, but very few now remain.
