The wide green space was once occupied by the Paddock Wood to Hawkhurst Railway line. There were intermediate stations at Horsmonden, Goudhurst and Cranbrook, and the line was opened in two stages. The first from Paddock Wood to Hope Mill (subsequently renamed Goudhurst, on the first day of this section's opening) on 4 September 1893 for Goudhurst and Lamberhurst and the second stage from Goudhurst to Hawkhurst on 4 September 1893. The line closed completely on 12 June 1961. Robin Webster says of Image that there is no actual sign of a bridge underneath. so could the brickwork have been removed and the space created infilled as a cheaper option to the removal of the hump?
