The church is an 1862 rebuild of an earlier church. There are few written records relating to the early history of this site. The dedication of the church to St Gwendoline (one of the saintly daughters of King Brychan of Brycheiniog), the almost circular churchyard and the siting near the River Wye, indicate a possible origin in the early Middle Ages, perhaps earlier.
