St Stephen's Lane at the side of the Grade I-listed "Ancient House" on Buttermarket. The earliest reference to this property is a C14th one, when it was owned by the knight, Sir Richard of Martlesham. In the 16th century the house was owned by a series of local merchants including George Copping, a draper, and it was Copping who also commissioned the panelling of the ground floor room at the front of the building. He also built the 'long gallery' on the first floor. The restored front elevation, featuring pargeting and elaborate wood carvings, was not one of its original feature; these being added by Robert Sparrowe between 1660-70. The Sparrowe family became the owners of the house in 1603, and they retained ownership of it for the next 300 years. The Ancient House has been owned by Ipswich Borough Council since 1980. In addition to the ground floor retail space, there is also a small art gallery in the attic which houses occasional exhibitions.
