Temporary road over rock fall at Artilligan

At approximately 20:00 hr on Sunday 18th July 1998 a 4,500 tonne rock fall blocked the A83 at Artilligan. A team of Council workers who were placing flood-warning signs had just passed the site minutes before the failure. Traffic under 7.5 tonnes was diverted via a 30 mile long detour on a single-track road with passing places and goods vehicles were detained at either side of the closed section of road. Remedial works took five days and during this time an enhanced ferry service from Tarbert was provided to allow movement of the heavy goods vehicles off the peninsula. A single lane of the road was reopened, with traffic control, on Friday 23rd.
