Beyond the building, the line of trees marks the route of the former Paddock Wood to Hawkhurst Railway. There were intermediate stations at Horsmonden, Goudhurst and Cranbrook and the line was opened in two stages. The first from Paddock Wood to Hope Mill (subsequently renamed Goudhurst, on the first day of this section's opening) on 4 September 1893 for Goudhurst and Lamberhurst and the second stage from Goudhurst to Hawkhurst on 4 September 1893. The line closed completely on 12 June 1961.
