The wording of the new memorial, unveiled on the 70th anniversary of the worst day in Bournemouth's Second World War story. On 23 May 1943 an air raid destroyed many town-centre sites, most notably the Hotel Metropole (the site now occupied by Image, just to our left). The death toll in Bournemouth that day, a mix of military and civilian, is reckoned to have been between 130 and 210. In the distance we see the Roundhouse Hotel, which was the first hotel to be built in Bournemouth postwar.
