Stanhope "Castle", seen in the middle distance, is really a mansion which stands in the centre of Stanhope. It was built in 1798 on the possible site of a medieval castle, and was enlarged in Victorian times to cater for shooting parties. http://www.gatehouse-gazetteer.info/English%20sites/1019.html
