A plaque at the edge of the Lion Street chapel records that after the Toleration Act of 1689, the Independents built the first Nonconformist Chapel in Brecon here in 1699 on the site of an alehouse called The Plough. The old chapel was rebuilt in 1841. The chapel seen here was built in 1892. Plough Chapel is a member of the United Reformed Church and the Union of Welsh Independents.
