The playwright Joe Orton lived and died with his partner Kenneth Halliwell at 25 Noel Road, marked here by a green London Borough of Islington plaque. In summer 1967, with their relationship under strain as Orton's career took off whilst Halliwell's writings failed to attract interest, Halliwell battered in Orton's skull with a hammer before killing himself with sleeping pills. The film "Prick up your ears" depicts the relationship and eventual murder/suicide. Orton's own published diaries record life in the flat and their claustrophobic relationship; the published diaries of their friend Kenneth Williams also record visits here.
