Over twelve hundred years ago a simple church dedicated to St Mary stood on this site. It was replaced by a much larger one in the thirteenth century. This began to fall into disuse as the Abbey was accepted as the Hexham's church. But the people of Hexham had long been used to walking through the old church as a short cut to and from the market place. As the old building gradually began to be used and adapted for other uses, the walkway was retained, and is called Old Church to this day. See Image
