Opened in 1874 by the Cheshire Lines Committee as the terminus of the line from Manchester via Warrington, this station closed in 1972. A new Central underground station on MerseyRail's Northern Line was opened in 1977, located underneath the same site. View south. The original ground-level site was being used as a car park when this image was taken.
