I usually carry a very battered and out-of-date map, because it doesn't matter if it gets even more tattered. On advantage of this is that it draws my attention to changes in the landscape. Like the 1955-61 one-inch map, the early 1:50,000 series shows this as the principal route up from Ashogle, and the road via Tillyfar, which is now a public road, as a minor one. On the 1945-48, this was the public road.
