Established shortly after the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829, it was the first convent in Northern Ireland since the Reformation. The Poor Clares have been prominent in providing education at primary and secondary level in Newry. The large Sacred Heart Grammar School, a top UK school in terms of academic results, and now housed in a modern 17 acre campus at Ashgrove, on the north side of Newry, was formerly housed in part of this building.
