This is the view from the down platform at Charing station, looking towards Lenham and Maidstone East. The line from Otford to Maidstone East was opened on 1st June 1874 by the London, Chatham & Dover Railway. On 1st July 1884 this was extended from Maidstone East to Ashford with intermediate stations opening at Bearsted, Hollingbourne, Harrietsham, Lenham and Charing on the same day. The station has the feel of a real country station and is very attractive. The waiting room is a mass of plants, has leather sofas and books for sale. It has won numerous awards as witnessed by all the certificates on the walls.
