A large spreading house begun by John Wood (better known for his work in Bath) for Sir Robert Throckmorton in 1755-58. In 1910 W.H. Romaine-Walker enlarged the house for Sir Maurice FitzGerald. The unusually tall ground floor skews the proportions. Grade II* listed. Since this photo was taken, when I think the house was empty, it deteriorated to the extent that it appeared on English Heritage's Buildings at Risk Register before being snapped up and restored.
