The inscription on the near side commemorates "John Ure, LL.D., born at Glasgow, 19th July 1824, died at Helensburgh, 1st August 1901", and his wife Isabella Gibb (b. at Glasgow, 10th May 1828; d. at Helensburgh 15th Feb 1915). As noted on the base of the monument, the stone is "the property of John Ure, Cairndhu House and his family".
