The origins of the town are lost in time, but it is recorded that in 1226 King Henry III granted the Lord of the Manor the right to hold a market in Ringwood on Wednesdays, which still happens today. The opening of the railway in 1847 put Ringwood on the map being on the main line from London to Dorchester and places further west. This closed in 1966. The ever-busy A31 trunk route skirts just to the north of the town centre, but Ringwood retains and old-world market town charm.
