Some C16th parts remain, and perhaps even C13th when it was a proper castle, but this is largely the work of a succession of Victorian architects - Sharpe & Paley in 1846-48, Paley & Austin in 1879-82 and W. & R. Mawson in 1890 (and Paley may have had a third bite of the cherry). Grade I listed. Its prominence in the surrounding landscape is captured here: Image
