The B6273 through Houghton Common is high and can be bleak, but provides a wooded common landscape that hides its proximity to the rather different bleakness of the former mining town of Hemsworth to the North and the former mining village of Great Houghton to the South, with the former mining village of Grimethorpe beyond the woodland of Houghton Common and the adjacent West Haigh Wood to the West.
