The park occupies the site of a 27acre pool drained to prevent flooding in the nearby Valley Pit. A levy on locally produced coal financed the park which opened in the early 1930s. The pavilion shown in a 1931 photograph will soon be refurbished and extended with a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. Behind the pavilion on the far side of the park is the new Tesco superstore.
