Below the gable of the converted church shown in Image and Image It records that "this memorial stone was laid by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Teck on Monday, 23rd August, 1886" and names the architect as Chas J Gladman ARIBA etc (sic). Princess Mary Adelaide, the Duchess of Teck, was the Queen's great-grandmother. She had led an extravagant lifestyle, and had fled the country to avoid her creditors in 1883, but returned in time for this occasion, devoting her life to charitable works. Perhaps this absolved her of her debts. The church was converted into flats in 1986 - "unsympathetically", according to Cherry & Pevsner (1991).
