The church was built between 1861 and 1864 to a design by the Lancaster architect E. G. Paley at a cost of £6,000 (£440,000 as of 2013). It provided seating for 604 people. Paley donated a stained glass window depicting the healing of the sick man. The steeple was added in 1871 by the partnership of Paley and Austin. The church is designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building. The churchyard contains the war graves of three soldiers of World War I, and an airman of World War II.
