Opened in 1839 by the Birmingham & Derby Junction Railway, in the early days of railways this was the interchange station from Derby and the north to London Euston. Despite the opening of a much more convenient station for Hampton-in-Arden in 1884, the original one seems to have clung on to a passenger service until 1917 and closed to goods in 1935. The line is just on the other side of the building.
