The Cottage Stoke Works

Located in the village of Stoke Works on the Worcester and Birmingham canal. The village was built by John Corbett to house the salt works employees after he purchased the salt works here in 1852. There were salt works here since 1828, but had been unprofitable most of the time in 1852 John Corbett bought 3 parcels of land to start his takeover of the works, the cottage in this picture was the first property/land he bought. He made the salt works very profitable and by the 1840's he was employing upwards of 200 people in the works. John Corbett sold the salt works in 1888 to the Salt Union Ltd, by that time he was well known in the area and had been given the name The Salt King.
