The Old Meeting House re-interments, Witton Cemetery

The red granite obelisk marks the re-interment of 1,503 coffins from the grave-yard of the Old Meeting House, Birmingham, which had been acquired for the enlargement of New Street station. The site is in the order of 40 x 30 metres, defined by obeliskal bollards and, originally, chains. The monument was paid for by the railway companies. Inscriptions on the east and west faces of the pedestal of the obelisk tell the story. East The London and North Western Railway Company having acquired the Old Meeting House school buildings and grave-yard under authority of Parliament for the purpose of enlarging New Street railway station the remains of the dead with the tombstones and monuments were in the year 1882 removed under superintendence of the Trustees with the approval of the Town Council of the Borough of Birmingham. West Old Meeting House Birmingham This Memorial is erected to point out the spot in which are deposited the mortal remains of those persons who were buried in the grave-yard adjoining the Old Meeting House Birmingham. The re-interments were made in vaults and graves corresponding as nearly as possible with those in the former grave-yard. The existing rights of interment are reserved to this enclosure by arrangement with the Trustees. 1882.
