The hotel, bar and restaurant is viewed across Kidderminster Road from the corner of Pewterers Alley. The black boy in the name of the hotel was King Charles II. During the years when England was a republic (the Commonwealth of 1649-1660), Charles was in exile on the continent of Europe. During this period, Royalists were persecuted and the royal toast was forbidden. Charles had a swarthy complexion, so supporters of the Crown would drink to the health of The Black Boy Across The Water.
