Looking upstream from the London Road bridge. The Wandle valley was industrialised very early, and was for centuries the site of many water-mills. The river itself has been diverted this way and that, into mill leats and ponds - so that its original course is not easy to make out. Although I have known the Wandle since early childhood, I hadn't seen these buildings before - but realised immediately that they must mark the site of a former mill. Ian Yarham gives the name of the site as Grove Mill: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2928495 The mill survives as a long two-storey building - brick-built - to the left of those seen in the picture.
