Opened in 1866 by the Great Eastern Railway as the terminus of its line from Manningtree, it replaced an 1854 station which had been located to the left of this image beyond the old goods shed and closer to the pier. View north towards the buffers. There had once been a 2nd island platform to the left. The canopy seen here was a remnant of a much larger one, and was finally removed in 2018. See Image for a 2022 view from a similar camera position.
