Most of what is visible here is the work of William Chambers, 1771-74, for Lord Milton who swept away most of the previous monastic buildings (the C14th church, far right, was spared). The style is Gothic Revival. Grade I listed. Milton Abbey School has been here for some years. In a not untypical act of aristocratic hubris, the good Lord had the nearby village moved because of its proximity to his house. His obstreperous side was not reserved for the local peasants alone for Chambers fell out with him and resigned, the interiors being completed by James Wyatt.
