Northern Greenway

Part of a public open space within the recently built New England Quarter which follows the track bed of the former goods yard railway. The path links Stroudley Road to New England Road crossing the latter on an old listed railway bridge before steps take you down to the road below. The greenway which includes native plants has only recently been opened after protracted negotiations with Network Rail who owned the northern portion of the land. The pillars and part of the retaining wall to the left are the only remains of Brighton's former locomotive works which opened in the 1850s and closed in 1957. The works were briefly retained for the production of Isetta bubble cars until 1965 and the land was demolished and cleared in 1969 after which the area was used as a giant car park until development was finally agreed and began in 2004.
