This once run-down street in New Islington Manchester has recently been transformed into a European-style boulevard. Now the major route to and from the city centre, Old Mill Street has been designed to keep traffic speeds down, increase pedestrian safety and create a potential ‘marketplace’ for New Islington where new shops and businesses can take advantage of passing trade. Old Mill Street’s new look includes a central spine of unusual lamp posts, designed to represent bent girders, tree-lined walkways and a 'bridge' made from reclaimed railway sleepers.
