Looking south-west on a crisp springtime morning. Carlton is very much a linear village with most of the housing strung out along this road, which becomes Congerstone Lane as it bends to the left. The name 'Carlton' derives from the Old English 'Ceorl's tun' which means 'settlement of the freemen', probably from the 6th century when the Middle Angles settled this part of Leicestershire. The 'tun' ending is common in these parts.
