Dumbarton Parish Churchyard: south-west corner

The path of stones leads along a passage between the southern boundary wall of the kirkyard, on the left, and the church halls, on the right, associated with Image The church halls can be seen to the right of the church in another picture: Image Most of the surviving memorials were cleared away in the early 1970s to make room for the church halls, but a few of them remain. Some have been incorporated into or set against the southern boundary wall; in order better to preserve them, they are largely buried, with only their upper parts visible, but some metal plaques in front of them give the essential details. For example, in this picture, the Image is on the near left; the more distant one, visible to the left of the far end of the path of stones, is for William Johnstone and his daughter Elizabeth, both of whom died in the "cholera year" of 1832 (compare Image). The passage contains several more old stones behind the photographer's position.
